Our favourite artist
It doesn’t matter what style, media or who the painter/artist is, but a house isn’t a home without paintings on its wall. A home wouldn’t look the same if walls were kept bare. It would look extremely clinical, not to mention ultra boring. Paintings make a house come alive. It therefore stands to reason that the more paintings one has, the more vibrant and colourful a home becomes. Each painting bought is not only an investment in its own right, but becomes a personal treasure to be admired by its owners and visitors to your home.
If you can afford it, it’s great to accumulate a number of paintings over the years from different artists. In Malta there are a number of talented artists. One of our favourites is Rupert Cefai. In fact Jan and I have a small number of his paintings. They were bought on different occasions and now hang happily in our living room, bedroom and dining room. I don’t know how we came to know about him but what I do know is that we love his vibrant and unique style.
Below is the first painting that I personally bought from Rupert for Jan a few years ago (although since I took this pic, it has moved to the dining room) :). I specifically chose this one because I loved the colours and abstract landscape boxy style. This painting also spoke “hope” and evoked a sense of “new beginnings” for me. Since then we have bought a couple more and would love to buy even more if only we can find enough wall space to hang his beautiful paintings. :))).

Colour splashes
I simply adore white and off-white painted furniture and while you can carry on with these hues into your soft furnishings, a splash of colour is all you need to magically transform an otherwise monotonous look. Here are some home decor inspirations which definitely do the trick.
PINKS and REDS
Pink and touches of green turn this living area into a very warm and welcoming room. The fuchsia ottoman is the focal point here.
Burgundy and grey furniture and soft furnishings in this living room give it a regal look. Stylish and elegant.
Splashes of burgundy in the soft furnishings and pastel blues, pinks and greens on the bookshelves make this study very welcoming and a more interesting space to work.
BLUES
You cannot go wrong by adding touches of blue to a white bedroom. Here splashes of yellow multiply the charm factor in this room

What your jewellery says about YOU
Women have been decorating themselves with ornamental wear such as jewellery since Egyptian times. Without going into various debates as to why women wear (or do not wear) jewellery, in my humble opinion, jewellery helps us feel good about ourselves. Jewellery helps to enhance our looks and attractiveness and turn heads. Yes, the ‘right’ kind of jewellery – that’s unique, genuine, handmade, creative and beautifully crafted – draws attention. It makes people stop and look at us all the more. And we know that.
While everybody has their own preferences, jewellery helps a woman create her own personal style. Most often than not, the type of jewelry a woman buys and wears also says a lot about her. Since jewellery is noticeable, others get an immediate impression of who the woman is. It stands to reason that the kind of jewellery a woman wears says a lot about her personal taste.
Some women prefer contemporary jewellery while others prefer more conventional and traditional styles and would not be caught dead wearing costume jewellery. I have jewellery that is conventional and many costume jewellery pieces which are reserved for everyday wear. Personally, I would only buy something if if looks different or is made with genuine gems and materials. I mean if jewellery is there to accentuate our looks and make us feel special, why buy something that everybody else has? What’s the point in that?
Keeping all this in mind, and knowing that I wanted to sell and make beautiful jewellery, I researched what kind of jewellery was offered locally either in shops/stores selling ‘branded’ jewellery, in small boutiques/outlets which do not specifically sell a particular brand and on social media sites like facebook where a handful of other virtual ‘shop owners’ are selling directly through their facebook group or page.
What makes DECORIZEME different is that it falls somewhere in-between the above. I am NOT selling jewellery of a particular BRAND. There are many local jewellery shops already doing that. So why re-invent the wheel? I am NOT selling jewellery that is mass-produced either. There are a lot of sellers out there selling ‘glizzy’ costume jewellery that might be cheap, but is CHEAP what you are after? Most of the jewellery is made from imitation materials. I told myself straight away that I didn’t want to cater for that kind of market. My niche market is one which seeks quality, genuine, unique handmade pieces of jewellery.
I am selling jewellery made from GENUINE gems, crystals and materials like swarovski crystals, Czech glass beads, Lampwork beads etc and sterling silver or silver plated items. The prices therefore fall somewhere in-between very expensive branded goods and cheap imitation mass-produced goods. So if you love jewellery and want something that is original and cannot be found in every other shop, DECORIZEME is the place for YOU or your loved one. Country Shabby Chic
Call me a romantic but I simply adore French and English country shabby chic. This decor style oozes of charm and induces a homely feel that isn’t easily achieved with other styles. Other styles simply don’t compare. So, what does it look like?
Well for starters, the look entails more than just buying white furniture. The style incorporates feminine, vintage, antique and romantic elements in the materials, decor, furniture and soft furnishings chosen. Blues, purples, off white, rose and yellows work well on walls. Junk and flea market finds are a must if you want to create this style. So look out for old books, boxes, glass bottles, linen table cloths, lace, old china, tin signs, old postcards and tins, old keys, painted picture and photo frames, wire and wooden heart decorations and so forth. Fill vases and glasses with lavender or wild flowers and adorn your house with candles. For a French country look accessorize with fleur de lys materials and hand-painted ceramic tiles.
For a more English ‘cottage style’ country shabby chic look, decorate with crystal, floral porcelain and materials, white/cream linen and lace, cushions, fine bone china (and junk shop finds), butler trays, wooden trays, antique frames and prints. Touches of red on white/cream decor also work well with the English country look. Fresh garden flowers are a must.
Of course whether you prefer French or English country shabby chic is a matter of taste, however, in both decoration styles, many of the furniture pieces are distressed and painted in various pastel shades, antique white and/or off white paints. Others are only party painted and some pieces aren’t painted at all.
In essence, both of these styles can simply be what you want them to be. For me country shabby chic is an ecclectic mix of soft furnishings, decorations and furniture along with my own handmade items and decoration style.
Here is a bit of what country shabby chic looks like to me:
I painted a pine shelf and included bits and pieces that I’ve had for years but didn’t know where to place. I think they feel quite at home on this shelf.
I acquired quite a few pieces of pink and white china over the past few years thanks to Jan’s sister. They now sit nicely in a beautiful IKEA vitrine in my hallway.
I wanted my spare bedroom to have a romantic English country look to it. I decorated the room with white furniture and white and light blue soft furnishings and decorations. The rennovation of this room cost me less than 100 euros.
In our ‘second’ living room or den, Jan and I bought two IKEA chaise lounges. I kept this room simple and just added two colourful ‘country-looking’ large pillows from… yeah, IKEA. 🙂
In my opinion, every shabby chic inspired home should have a wooden lantern … or two. This one sits on a low open IKEA console in my dining room. The flowers are porcelain roses.
If you can’t have fresh flowers, the next best option is to choose good quality artificial flowers and place them in a simple glass vase. This one is a focal point in my bathroom. When I say it’s my bathroom, that’s exactly what it is… no males are allowed in . :).
This is one of my own water colour and india ink paintings which is hung one of my dining room walls. Pity I don’t paint as much as I used to :(.

Life’s a BEACH
It doesn’t have to be summer to incorporate a beach theme look in your home. You really don’t need that many items either to create a relaxed beach feel to your house. All you need is a little imagination and ‘beach items’ placed strategically in spaces and spots in your home to create the relaxed and welcoming feel synonymous with beach life.
Materials can include drift wood, glass bottles, sea shells, starfish, sand, dried sponges, twigs, pebbles and twine and so forth. Personally, I would also choose materials in muted tones and neutral shades such as white/off white, cream, vanilla, light blue, violet and brown. These colours used in beach inspired decorations work well together.
Here are beach inspired decoration displays that anyone can create.
The glass starfish candle holder was made by wrapping a piece of twine around the starfish on the front of the candle holder and tying it at the back.
Although this table setting may seem a little over the top for some, I like the starfish centre piece on the table and the large flat seashells casually strewn above each place setting. Crystal and white porcelain dishes and items really work well together too.
Love this crate table centre piece. It’s so creatively cool and beach-like.
An instant beach look is achieved simply by filling large glass bottles with shells, pebbles and/or costume jewellery pearls and placing them on a shelf like this.
These floating candle displays are simply gorgeous and create such a serene and romantic look.
If you have a nook or a built-in shelf you can decorate it like this. The bottles contain dyed sand dust. Just add a bleached white tag and viola. Instant beach feel. I also like the large pebbles placed in the bottles.
Alternatively you can just buy, or perhaps find, a large sea shell and place it strategically on a nice piece of furniture in your hallway, dining room or bathroom to create an instant ‘beach’ impact.
There you have it. These are just a few decor ideas that you can use to create a beach-like look to your home.

Paint it!
Before having a go at painting furniture myself I looked at how others went about restoring and painting pine furniture in order to try to implement some of their techniques. While I am certainly no decorating master, the few pine pieces I painted, rather than threw away, turned out looking quite good.
Below is a picture of three items I painted: the monks bench, the mirror and small pine display cabinet. As can be seen they all look fresh and completely different from the way they were before

After I finished painting the monks bench, I scraped some paint off the edges and design to give the piece a weathered distressed look. Below is the result.

This is a pic of the above cabinet when it was nearly finished. I also distressed this piece but used oil rather than acrylic paint.
